New Blackberry OS could save RIM

If you are in the know about smart phone market share you have probably read, seen or heard about the fall of Research in Motion and their Blackberry. RIM’s market share is plummeting, but with the recent announcement of a new Operating System there may be a light at the end of the dark abyss RIM has fallen into. Here’s is why this new OS might just save them.

The new OS, dubbed BBX will bring a combination of the Blackberry OS and the recently bought QNX. BBX will bring unification to all RIM’s devices including phones and tablets like the Playbook, and anything else RIM has in store. This could help improve the experience between devices. Read More »

The New Blackberry OS and Why it doesn’t Matter

At the Research in Motion BlackBerry developer conference today, co-founder and CEO Mike Lazardis announced a new operating system for Blackberry smartphones, tablets and other devices. The new Operating system was dubbed BBX, not to be confused with BBM. RIM may be trying to save their market share with the update, but Blackberry’s failure isn’t because of the OS.

The Blackberry is screwed no matter what; RIM seems like a boring company with nothing exciting going on in their cell phone market, an OS update isn’t going to save them. Read More »

iMessage the BBM Killer

User Request

The only thing that Blackberry had on Apple’s iPhone was a messenger client. Now, that is in the past with the introduction of iMessage into iOS 5. iMessage brings the same features as BBM and is a great service that may intrigue BBM users to ditch RIM and head to Apple. Here’s why they should.

Simplicity

When you download iOS 5 onto your device you won’t find a dedicated app for iMessage, like BBM. The messaging service is built right into the existing messaging app. This will avoid users needing to learn how to use the free IM service…

iMessage, A Few Negatives

User Request

iMessage is an extremely simple service made by Apple to compete with their failing competitor; RIM’s BBM. So simple in fact, we are having trouble finding its imperfections. Wish us luck.

Send receipts

You may have already read the “Good” side of iMessage and be thinking “Why is this bad?” Well receipts themselves are not bad, but the way Apple implemented them are. Back story: Receipts, believe it or not, are the reason the service has not only taken the business but also the teenage market by storm.  Unlike MMS where I only know my message has been sent out from my phone, BBM says “delivered.”   Read More »

iOS 5 is a major improvement

Probably one of the most anticipated updates to the iPhone, software wise, has to be iOS 5. For a while the software was lacking in features and falling behind the Android OS. But as of yesterday, when the fifth installment was released to the public; Apple’s phone has improved greatly. Here’s why.

Notifications

Android is, or was, top dog in notification systems. They beat out iOS’s terrible system by a long shot. But now Apple has done what they do best. Taken an idea (Android Notifications) and made it even better. The new notification system takes a lot of queues from Android with the pull down menu, etc but adds in an in-depth notification center, which makes it probably the best system for updating you on all mobile devices.

iOS 5 still lacks essential features

With Apple losing a lot of users to Android for their superior OS, you would think Apple would really step it up when they planned iOS 5. Sadly, this wasn’t the case. iOS 5, just like iOS 4 before it, is lacking the same essentials it needed to compete with Android.

No Widgets

One of the most craved features for iOS 5 was widgets. Everyone wanted them, but Apple failed to deliver. Now more than ever, with the increasing number of apps we download onto our phones, we will be wasting our time opening and switching through them just to see the weather, post to Facebook, check our notes. This brings me to the next downside…

Dragons in Minecraft; A Comedic Win

If you follow Notch, the creator of the Indie game hit; Minecraft, then you saw a while back a tweet that he was developing epicness in Minecraft. Obviously the tweet got the huge Minecraft community excited and craving more information. Notch obliged and released snap shots of……Dragons!

You may be wondering how this is good for Minecraft. Well, dragons are fucking cool. Don’t deny it. Everyone, and I mean everyone, loves a good slaying every now and then. Dragons could really add to the “cool” factor of Minecraft while also adding yet another thing to hunt, kill, and/or deal with in creative ways…

Dragons in Minecraft; Bad News

After Notch tweeted pictures of what looks like a Dragon flying around the 8-bit world of Minecraft you may be excited for the update or if you’re like me you may not be too thrilled about what’s to come.

Dragons, sure they are cool, but they seem to be getting too cool. You could even say; cliché. Dragons are everywhere. From childhood story books to the games we play as adults like Elder Scrolls, we have grown up with dragons and I myself am starting to get tired of them. In a game like Minecraft, the last thing I want to deal with, or see, are dragons. It will almost seem cheesy. I just want to build and kill, some very original, Creepers! …

Facebook iPad app; A Great Addition to the Team

“The iPad’s not mobile… it’s a computer.” These are words straight from The Zuckerberg. Mark has either changed his mind or that was all a plot to get you off Facebook’s trail of the future software. Today the long awaited, and much rumored, Facebook iPad app has been released.

When you first launch the fresh app on your iPad you will notice similarities between a mobile app and a desktop version of Facebook, which makes sense because Facebook has tried to unify the two. The first screen will be familiar to iPhone app users. You will be greeted by a full screen list of your friend’s updates. Where the iPad’s 10 inch screen really comes into play is the use of a “sidebar” like interface. Tapping in the top left corner triggers a menu to slide out from the left. News feed, Messages, Near-by, apps, etc are available in this bar.

So what shines in this iPad version of Facebook? What makes this a great app? It’s all in the update information….

Facebook iPad app; Why Bother

When Mark said the words “The iPad’s not mobile… it’s a computer.” I expected him to keep his word. After all, he is right. The iPad isn’t mobile; if you want Facebook, hit up the URL box. The pros between the app and the desktop version are slim anyway.

The truth is the app itself doesn’t bring in any features that the site doesn’t have. The gap that they were trying to bridge between iPhone and desktop was a small gap to start with…
